Extension and Refurbishment

2026

Complete

A timber-clad extension where expressed glulam structure, daylight and shading become part of the architecture.

This extension and refurbishment reworks an existing Epsom home to create a more generous family space with a much stronger connection to the garden. Timber cladding gives the new addition its own character, providing a warmer and more tactile counterpoint to the existing house.

Large glulam beams are a defining part of the design. Rather than being treated simply as structure, they are expressed externally to create depth across the elevation, provide useful shading to the glazing and give the extension a clear architectural rhythm. The structure, cladding and large openings were developed together so that the addition feels considered as a whole. Internally, the new layout improves circulation and brings more daylight into the principal living spaces, while the expressed timber structure remains an important part of how the extension is experienced from both inside and the garden.
