A substantial family home reimagined through contemporary additions that open the principal living spaces towards the garden.

Woodfield Lane reimagines a substantial family home in Ashtead with a series of contemporary additions focused on the rear garden. The design opens the ground floor almost completely to the outside, using large areas of glazing to connect the kitchen, dining and living spaces with a broad terrace and landscaped garden. Above, the composition becomes more varied: a pitched, glazed volume sits alongside a darker projecting element, breaking down the scale of the upper floor and giving different rooms their own relationship with the garden.

A restrained palette of white surfaces, timber and darker cladding gives the elevations depth without becoming overly complicated. The proposal is deliberately strongest at the rear, where the architecture responds to the landscape and creates a series of indoor and outdoor spaces for family use. Rather than relying on a single architectural gesture, the project is built up from a number of simple volumes that work together to give the house a clear contemporary identity.
