The Coach House, Epsom

Extension and Refurbishment

The careful adaptation of an existing coach house, retaining its established character while creating a more functional contemporary home.

The Coach House project is centred on the careful adaptation of an existing building in Epsom, retaining its established character while making it work as a contemporary home. The design approach treats the original fabric as an asset, with new interventions kept deliberately clear and simple rather than competing with the building. Openings, circulation and the arrangement of the principal rooms are reconsidered to improve daylight and make better use of the available floor area.

Where new elements are introduced, the emphasis is on robust materials and precise detailing, creating a distinction between existing and new without making the contrast overly pronounced. The project is less about adding architectural gestures and more about finding value in what is already there: improving proportions, connections and usability while allowing the character of the coach house to remain legible. The result is intended to feel settled and straightforward, with the new work supporting rather than overwhelming the original building.
