Broadlands Avenue, Shepperton
Extension and Refurbishment
2025
Complete
A Mediterranean-inspired extension where an expressed roof structure continues beyond the house to form a sheltered garden canopy.
Broadlands Avenue is a ground-floor extension in Shepperton designed to add a study and guest bedroom while improving the relationship between the house and garden. The architecture takes cues from the Mediterranean character of the existing house, allowing the new work to feel like a natural continuation rather than an unrelated contemporary addition.
The roof structure is deliberately expressed and runs across the full width of the extension, continuing beyond the external wall to form a sheltered canopy for outdoor use. Openings within the canopy allow daylight to pass through, preventing the covered terrace from making the interior feel dark. The material palette, slim-framed glazing and strong indoor-outdoor relationship reinforce the more relaxed Mediterranean feel. Structure is used as an architectural feature rather than concealed, with the rhythm of the roof tying the internal rooms and external terrace together.
