Christ Church Ewell

Community

Complete

A considered intervention to an existing church building, balancing new requirements with the character of the original architecture.

The proposals for Christ Church Ewell look at how the existing church can be adapted to better support the way the building is used by its congregation and wider community. The project is focused on practical improvements to accessibility, circulation and the quality of the supporting spaces, while respecting the character of the existing church. Rather than making a single dominant addition, the design is intended to sit comfortably alongside the established building and improve the way people arrive, move through and use it day to day.

New work is expressed in a simple contemporary language, with materials and proportions chosen to complement rather than imitate the original architecture. The scheme also considers how the building can become more welcoming and flexible, allowing different activities to take place without compromising its primary role as a place of worship. The completed project was developed through a careful reading of the existing building, its setting and the needs of the church community.
