Camden Street, Camden

Extension and Refurbishment

2018

Complete

A compact London extension shaped by the constraints of its urban site and the need to maximise light and usable space.

The brief for this Camden house was driven by a very practical change in family life: the owners needed an additional bedroom ahead of the arrival of twins. With little spare space on the site, a first-floor rear extension was the only realistic way to create the room required, but it also made the planning process particularly important. The extension was shaped to reduce its effect on neighbouring properties, with a pitched roof lowering the boundary condition and helping to control its overall mass. Brickwork ties the new work back to the house, while changes in mortar treatment distinguish the ground and first-floor elements without introducing an unrelated material.

Brown coping and coloured doors and windows complete the palette. Alongside the additional bedroom, the project reorganises the rear of the house and improves the way the family uses the existing space. It is a compact project, but one that allowed the clients to adapt their home rather than move as their family grew.
