Bungalow Ruden Way

Extension and Refurbishment

2026

Planning approved

A substantial reworking of an existing bungalow that adds space while retaining the low, domestic character of the original building.

This proposal for Ruden Way explores how a bungalow can be reworked to provide more generous accommodation while retaining the low, domestic character that suits the site. The design uses the existing footprint and roof form as a starting point, introducing new space in a way that avoids the building simply becoming a conventional two-storey house. The front and rear elevations are treated differently in response to their setting: the street side remains relatively composed and private, while the garden elevation can open more freely to views and daylight.

Internally, the plan is reorganised to improve the relationship between the main living spaces and to make better use of areas that were previously constrained by the original bungalow layout. The architectural language is deliberately simple, with a limited material palette and clearly proportioned openings. The project is currently at planning stage and aims to show how an existing bungalow can be adapted substantially without losing the qualities of scale and simplicity associated with the original building type.
