Three new homes designed around a steeply changing site, using the landscape to shape their scale, arrangement and character.
This Lower Kingswood development proposes three new homes on a steeply changing site. The topography was both the main constraint and the starting point for the design: rather than flattening the site or allowing the new buildings to dominate the street, the houses are arranged to work with the existing levels. From the road, the rear homes sit low in the landscape and are only partially visible, reducing their impact while creating opportunities for more private accommodation and integrated garages at lower levels.
Brick and stone give the buildings a robust, residential character, with the massing broken down into a series of recognisable forms rather than a single large volume. The layout has been developed to balance privacy, outlook and access across the site, while still allowing each house to have a clear relationship with its own external space. The proposal uses the difficult level changes to shape the architecture and create a development that feels embedded in the site rather than placed on top of it.
