The transformation of an existing building into a new church, creating a calm and welcoming place for worship and the wider community.
The Well is the conversion and remodelling of an existing building in South Norwood to create a new home for the church. The proposals work with the existing structure, adapting it to provide a series of spaces for worship, gathering and community use while giving the building a clearer architectural identity.
At the heart of the project is the main worship space, conceived as a simple, vaulted room with a warm and restrained material palette. Timber is used throughout to soften the interior, while a series of rooflights introduces natural light from above. At the end of the space, a tall opening within the gable provides a natural focal point and frames views towards the surrounding landscape.
Externally, the existing building is unified through a limited palette of brick and timber, with new openings and entrance elements improving its relationship with the site. The approach is deliberately modest, creating a contemporary church that feels welcoming and purposeful without being overly formal.
