House in Chiswick

Planning

A contemporary brick house developed in response to its conservation-area setting, reinterpreting familiar local forms and materials.

This Chiswick house was developed as a contemporary response to a sensitive residential setting, using brick, curved forms and carefully detailed openings to give the proposal its character. The design takes cues from the bay windows and softer geometries found locally, reinterpreting them rather than copying the surrounding architecture. Internally, the house is organised around a series of connected family spaces, including a breakfast area and feature stair that bring activity into the centre of the plan.

Brickwork continues as an important material inside and out, giving the scheme a sense of weight and continuity, while larger areas of glazing introduce a lighter counterpoint. The project was developed with particular attention to its conservation-area context and received positive feedback during the design process, although the scheme ultimately did not proceed when the client was unable to complete the land purchase. It remains a useful study in how a new home can be contemporary while still responding directly to the character of its setting.
