A substantial garden building providing flexible living and sleeping accommodation within a simple, carefully considered form.
This substantial garden building in Richmond was designed as a self-contained addition to the main house, providing generous flexible living space together with sleeping accommodation. Its position within the garden allowed the new building to establish its own architectural character while remaining clearly secondary to the main house.
The design uses a simple external form and carefully positioned glazing to bring daylight deep into the plan and maintain a strong connection with the surrounding garden. Internally, the accommodation is arranged to make the building comfortable for longer stays rather than functioning as a simple garden room or occasional workspace. Privacy, outlook and the relationship to the boundaries all informed the placement of openings. The result is a substantial but considered addition that extends the way the property can be used while contributing positively to the wider garden setting.
